One night Kisha was so fed up with her incarceration she tried to escape.

Mistake #1: Resting behind the tree.
Solution:
Stay in the shade behind the tree, but run where the shadow points. Then zig-zag through the woods after a safe point. Return to the stream some point later, then cross the river a safe way away from the prison to once again eliminate scent and confuse the dogs. Then try to find a roadside where you're not expected to be. Use a rock or something to unchain the leg irons, if possible. Or, if skilled enough, pick the locks with whatever object on the ground seems convenient.
Next, Kisha should have hid in the swamp, mindful of snakes. Follow a path leading into town, but ditch anything that would clearly identify her as a prisoner if possible. Find a man that appears seducible, but not dangerous. Do some kind things for him, and then request his help in disappearing. Make up some story. If he's not helpful, use the new clothes to flee alone. If helpful, and you trust him, stow away in his trunk. Adopt a new identity, and get some bus tickets to somewhere in New Mexico. Avoid working at any type of job that asks for your fingerprints.
But nope, Kisha got lazy, and did the cliche and predictable thing. She may as well have called out: "I'm over here!"
